Thank you for your interest in our breeding program. I first went into Nubian goats in 1993, when it was discovered our oldest son was intolerant to cow milk. We found that the sweet milk that the Nubian produces was the only goat milk we could tolerate taste wise and as it was also excellent for the various cheeses I made, we decided to stay with them. The Nubian has traditionally been regarded as a dual purpose breed, producing lots of sweet milk that is high in butterfat and protein but also dressing out well when butchered. I was lucky with my first purchases as I bought does which were heavy milkers. After that I couldn't see the point of having anything less, so I have concentrated on milk lines with correct conformation and udders. The large, deep bodies I breed for gives the does the capacity to take in enough feed to produce these larger volumes of milk, while at the same time maintaining themselves.
In 2005, the two top producing does over all breeds in the one day milk test were Nubian and in the top five, three were Nubian, proving that they can hold their own against the other dairy breeds. I owned two of the five top animals, with one of them placing second. Over the years, I have participated in both milk testing and classification and have been happy with the results of both.
I have tested for CAE for many years and have never had a positive animal. The
herd is also CL free and tested for G6S and Johne's disease. The babies are hand-raised on pasteurized milk and are always kept separate from the adults. Deworming is done once a year (or as needed) with Dectomax and I give bi-annual vitamin AD and Sel-E shots. I use my own mix of grain which consists of a 15% dairy goat ration and a COB mix without molasses. Everyone also gets black sunflower seed in the mix.
To reserve a kid, a $50 deposit is required. I prefer to have kids shipped or picked up by six weeks of age, as it is easier on the kids. Kids will be shipped out of Kelowna, B.C. and all shipping charges are responsibility of the new owner. All kids must be paid for in full within 2 weeks of notification of birth. Please check the purchase section of the website to fully understand my requirements for ordering an animal from my herd.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me. I love to discuss my animals and their pedigrees.
Sincerely,
Carol DuMont, Garden Gate Nubians
